Rakim – Holy Are You
21 Jul
I don’t get excited about much when it comes to music. Most things these days are average at best and sub-par more than they aren’t. Enter Rakim with the first single to his mythical Seventh Seal album, Holy Are You. I get excited just thinking about a Rakim 16. I downloaded this yesterday and have had it on repeat for the entire time, literally.
A little back story about my history with Rakim. In ‘87 when Paid in Full dropped, I went to my local record store and picked up a copy of…Exodus’ Pleasure of the Flesh. I’m not going to lie, I hated hip-hop back then. It was my cousin Louis that bought Paid in Full. But when I heard the first horns in I Ain’t No Joke, I started listening, and have been ever since.
Welcome back Ra.

Interesting is that the first Eric B and Rakim song that I heard that I loved was also “I Ain’t No Joke”. I had it on this comp.

Amazon says it came out in 1990. That’s false, considering I had it on cassette tape in 1988 when I was living in New York.
From then on, I always checked for Eric B and Rakim.
Funny thing is, that the famous 7 Minutes of Madness (or whatever it’s called) version of “Paid In Full” remix that was done by the dj crew Coldcut? I totally thought that was being done in realtime by the radio station DJ when I first heard it on the radio on a late saturday night in New York, circa 1988 or so. I had mad props for that DJ, even though he wasn’t as talented as I assumed.
Anyways, on with Rakim.
I haven’t heard a decent track from Rakim since “Guess Who’s Back”.
